The Two Iconic Eras of the PDC World Championship
Founded in 1994 following the historic split from the British Darts Organisation (BDO), the World Darts Championship has evolved across two defining eras:
The Circus Tavern Era (Purfleet, Essex)
Staged at a legendary nightclub venue holding around 800 to 1,000 spectators. The Circus Tavern era was synonymous with intense, atmospheric intimacy, low ceilings, and the undisputed supremacy of Phil "The Power" Taylor, who remarkably reached all 14 finals and lifted the trophy 11 times. The era concluded on New Year's Day 2007 with the epic sudden-death final between Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor.
The Alexandra Palace Era (North London)
In December 2007, the championship relocated to the Victorian landmark of Alexandra Palace in North London for the 2007/08 tournament. The Great Hall expanded seated spectator capacity (from an initial ~3,200 to over 5,000 per session for 2026/27, within a 10,250-capacity concert hall) and catalyzed the sport's global commercial explosion. Characterized by extravagant fancy dress, international broadcast reach into 100+ territories, and the emergence of modern superstars like Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright, Luke Humphries, and Luke Littler.

World Darts Championship History FAQ
Why did professional darts split into two world championships in 1993?
In January 1993, sixteen top professional players (including Phil Taylor, Dennis Priestley, Eric Bristow, and John Lowe) broke away from the British Darts Organisation to form the World Darts Council (WDC, later renamed the PDC). They sought increased television exposure, modernized sponsorship, and professional tournament staging after terrestrial UK television cut back darts coverage in the late 1980s.
Who won the very first PDC World Championship?
Dennis Priestley won the inaugural 1994 World Darts Championship at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, defeating Phil Taylor 6–1 in sets to collect the £16,000 first prize.
When did the World Championship move to Alexandra Palace?
The tournament moved from the Circus Tavern to Alexandra Palace for the 2008 World Championship (staged December 2007 to January 2008), where Canadian star John Part won the inaugural Ally Pally title.
